Getting started with good research data management (RDM) is difficult – but what if RDM becomes a ‘by-product’ of analysis and the barriers to entry for researchers in both digital analysis and fair RDM are lowered? Then perhaps the ‘open source platform Galaxy’ (https://usegalaxy.eu/) comes into play.
In this workshop, Galaxy will be presented for scientific research, participants will be familiarised with the platform, and a sample analysis will be carried out with them so that they can then work independently with it.
Galaxy works according to the modular principle, so that the individual programmes (called tools in Galaxy) can be combined with each other as required for the analysis. Based on the tools, we create a reproducible workflow step by step with Galaxy.
All (partial) results of the analysis are shareable and can be saved and published directly from Galaxy on Invenio-based platforms (such as Zenodo) as RO-Crate, for example. For projects in which the texts and media to be examined are proprietary, the individual analysis steps can be shared as a workflow so that the analysis is traceable even without sharing the data. This gives researchers insight into what is often considered a ‘black box’ in digital analysis.
Through the Galaxy Training Network, the resulting analyses and workflows can be used to create and publicly share custom training courses in the form of Open Educational Resources (OER), making them available for individual learning and further use in teaching, and ensuring their long-term availability. In this way, Galaxy supports researchers in the humanities in getting started with digital analysis and FAIR research data management. All from within the browser.
